The world’s “oldest” tour

An Egyptian guide once boasted, “Two-thirds of the world’s civilizations over 3,000 years old are in Egypt!” As exaggerated as it sounds, it’s true. Imagine Cairo as the capital 5,000 years ago, Egypt building 120 pyramids 4,000 years ago, and 3,000 years ago, Egyptians already had toothbrushes, high heels, and condoms.

A trip to Egypt is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Picture yourself amidst pyramids, the Sphinx, temples, museums, staying in heritage hotels, and dining in century-old restaurants—exploring and capturing moments in history! What an incredible journey!

I have traveled extensively in Egypt nine times, and this year will be my tenth. Like any major city, Egypt has a significant disparity in living standards, and I highly recommend prioritizing both food and accommodation during your trip.

我We dine at the Marriott Mena House Hotel in Cairo, where you can enjoy meals with a view of the Pyramids. Originally built in 1869 as a hunting lodge for Ismail Pasha, this location hosted the signing of the Cairo Conference in 1943.

Our culinary journey includes dining at the historic 1886 Restaurant at the Winter Palace Hotel, the oldest restaurant in Egypt, and the 1902 Restaurant at the Old Cataract Palace. Both offer royal treatment and exquisite cuisine.

As for accommodation, we’ve meticulously selected our stays. The Old Cataract Palace Hotel in Aswan, built in 1869, was once the royal residence of Egypt’s last king. Additionally, we spend three nights aboard the luxurious Sonesta river cruise, the top-ranked boat on the Nile. With over 300 cruise boats on the river, the Sonesta stands out as the only one with private balconies and spacious 40-square-meter rooms. The rest of our stay is in five-star hotels or top local accommodations, ensuring a premium experience throughout.

I once wrote an article titled “The Interweaving of Ancient Civilizations and Modern Culture.” When I reflect on it, I realize that humanity has had electric lights for 145 years and cars for 138 years. The United States has been a nation for 248 years, and most classical European architecture is less than 400 years old. However, Xi’an was already a city of a million people 1,400 years ago. Now, as I age, I wish for good health so I can spend two months in Cairo, two months in Xi’an, and two months on Daqiu Island in Matsu, giving my life a perfect conclusion.

Dai Stone, your Egypt tour is quite expensive!

Yes, let me share some insights into the numbers related to Egypt.

I have traveled extensively in Egypt nine times, and I consider myself the top high-end traveler to Egypt in Taiwan. I often say, “In every city worldwide, there are disparities in living standards; thus, when traveling to Egypt, one should prioritize food and accommodation.”

Let’s talk about the Nile cruises. When I go to Egypt, taking a Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor for four days and three nights is a must. There are 300 cruise boats, and they look stunning in photos. Once on board, meals and accommodations are both provided on the cruise. Given the length of the trip, if either food or lodging is unsatisfactory, it can significantly impact your mood. I’ve inspected over 50 high-end Egyptian riverboats, and the Sonesta is undoubtedly the best, being the only one with balconies. Consider that each double room costs $980 per day, totaling $2,940 for three nights.

Now let’s discuss meals. Over 13 days in Egypt, we had a total of 15 lunches and dinners. Most travel agencies charge around $7 to $10 per meal. We spent approximately $1,200 for all our meals, averaging over NT$4,500 for lunch and dinner each day. Notably, dining at the 1902 Restaurant in the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan hotel costs over $120 per meal.

When it comes to accommodation, we prioritize price over brand recognition. We stayed at the Old Cataract Palace Hotel by the Nile for $930 per night and the newly opened St. Regis Cairo for $899 per night, staying two nights. Our accommodation alone cost nearly NT$70,000.

Currently, the price for a 13-day trip to Egypt from Taiwan is around NT$180,000. Our expenses for food, accommodation, and the cruise alone exceed that. Additionally, we enjoyed expedited customs services, accompanied by a flight attendant, a photographer, and a glass of red wine each night. This reflects the high-standard service we offer, ensuring you receive great value for every penny spent!

Travel Information Introduction

Photos of attractions and meals are for reference only.

Egypt

In addition to the iconic images of pyramids, pharaohs, and Cleopatra, Egypt offers a wealth of luxurious hotels, restaurants, and river cruises fit for royalty. On this journey, we not only take you deep into Egypt’s famous historical landmarks, but also offer you the chance to stay in prestigious hotels where world leaders and celebrities have stayed, dine in exquisite restaurants, and cruise the Nile on one of the world’s top luxury ships. Our meticulously planned itinerary will completely redefine your expectations of travel in Egypt.

Sonesta Luxury Nile Cruise

The best way to experience the Nile is aboard a top-tier luxury cruise. Out of over 300 Nile cruises, Chairman Tai Sheng-Tung personally inspected more than 50. Although the Amarco II was a great option, it was fully booked by a U.S. agency for three years, so we switched to the Oberoi European-style cruise, which impressed our guests. Later, we discovered the Sonesta—a standout with spacious 12-ping suites, balconies, and stunning Nile views—ensuring an unparalleled luxury cruise experience.

When in Egypt, live like an Egyptian for a day and wow the crowd! Let’s dress up in traditional Egyptian attire. Men will wear custom-made white robes, while women can choose from dozens of colorful designs—so many options that you’ll be spoiled for choice!

Giza Pyramids Complex

The pyramids guard the transition of pharaohs from human to divine as they ascend to the heavens. Their immense power compelled successive pharaohs to invest vast resources in their construction. Located on the Giza Plateau near Cairo, this tomb complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979 and honored as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in July 2007. To create special memories, we have arranged for two camels for you to ride and take photos in front of the magnificent Giza pyramids.

The second pyramid is the tomb of Pharaoh Khafre, son of Khufu, built around 2650 BC, making it 4,667 years old. Its elevated position and architectural perfection make it even more impressive. Let’s explore the mysteries within the pyramid!

The Citadel of Saladin

The Citadel of Saladin began construction in 1176 and is located on the Muqattam Hill in Cairo, Egypt. The castle resembles a mini city, featuring not only the Ali Mosque but also various structures, including a police museum and a military museum, among others.

The Sphinx

The Sphinx, located next to the Khafre Pyramid, was built around 2558 to 2532 BC, making it approximately 4,500 years old. Between its massive paws lies a granite slab known as the “Dream Stele,” which recounts how it was once buried in sand. In around 1400 BC, the prince Thutmose IV, while resting on the Sphinx’s head during a hunt, dreamed that if he rescued it from the sand, he would become pharaoh. He did so and indeed became pharaoh. Standing about 24 stories high, it is the largest statue in the world carved from a single stone, and you must witness it for yourself.

Mena House Hotel’s 139 Restaurant

During World War II, the Cairo Conference was held here, attended by notable figures such as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Chiang Kai-shek, and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mena House, a century-old hotel originally a royal palace, is the closest hotel to the pyramids. It has hosted many famous guests, including American entrepreneur Bill Gates, detective novelist Arthur Conan Doyle, and comedian Charlie Chaplin. Dining at 139 Restaurant is a must, featuring a garden with a reflecting pool that mirrors the Great Pyramid, creating a romantic and unforgettable dining experience.

Marriott Mena House

Eighty years ago, the Cairo Conference took place at Mena House Marriott Resort during World War II. Held in 1943, the conference was attended by key figures including Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. It is said that the hotel still displays a signed photograph of the three leaders from that time.
Additionally, Mena House served as accommodation for world leaders during the celebrations of the Suez Canal’s completion in 1869. The hotel has also hosted celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin, John Travolta, Bill Gates, director Alfred Hitchcock, and former U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, as well as India’s former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan

The Old Cataract Hotel was established in 1869 and is renowned for its luxury, which led the last king of Egypt to use it as a royal residence. It has hosted numerous dignitaries, including former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, and the last Tsar of Russia. During a New Year’s tour on December 24, 2018, guests even spotted the King of Belgium checking in, capturing the moment with their phones. Chairman Tai Stone has ranked it among the world’s most remarkable hotels!

Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan‘s The 1902 Restaurant

The 1902 Restaurant in Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan, Egypt, boasts a lavish design and was once a significant venue for royal banquets. Named after the year it opened, the restaurant has been in operation for 115 years, making it one of the most prestigious dining establishments in the world.

The restaurant still houses two pianos that belonged to the kings, with one over a hundred years old and the other more than two hundred years old. During the Egypt tour on November 7, 2017, tour secretary Xiao Xian performed on the piano while Lina played the flute, creating a beautiful rendition of “Wang Chun Feng.” It’s noteworthy that the piano Xiao Xian played has a history of over 200 years, originally belonging to the king when this location served as the royal palace!

After finishing our meal, let’s head to the lounge for a drink and enjoy the romantic ambiance as we perfectly conclude this day.

冬Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor’s 1886 Restaurant

The 1886 Restaurant is the oldest in Egypt and a major highlight of our trip. Here, we dine like nobility. After our meal, we’ll head across the street to the 1886 Lounge for a drink, enjoying a romantic evening with our loved one.

Abdeen Palace

Abdeen Palace is one of the most famous palaces in Cairo and was once the site of the presidential residence. Completed in 1873, its modern European architectural design is a prime example of Egyptian European architecture. Here, we enjoyed a private chef’s feast in the opulent surroundings of the palace, dining like royalty. This exquisite culinary experience was truly priceless.

We not only experienced a level of luxury akin to that of the chairman but also enjoyed a private chef’s meal at Abdeen Palace, a privilege typically reserved for royalty!

After our meal, we explored the Abdeen Palace Museum, which boasts an impressive collection of artifacts. Did you know that Abdeen Palace houses four museums?

Saint Sergius and Bacchus Church

Located in Cairo’s Coptic Old Town, this is Egypt’s oldest Christian church, dating back to the 4th century. The church is dedicated to Saints Sergius and Bacchus, Christian soldiers martyred in Syria by Roman Emperor Maximian. Tradition holds that it was built on the site where the Holy Family rested during their flight to Egypt. According to legend, Joseph, guided by an angel, took Mary and the infant Jesus to this location, adding significant historical importance to the church in Christianity. Many Coptic bishops have been chosen from here.

Place of Refuge for Jesus

According to legend, the Virgin Mary once hid with the young Jesus in the caves beneath the site of the Saint Sergius and Bacchus Church.

Hanging Church

The Hanging Church, known as El-Muallaqa, derives its name from the fact that it is built above the city wall of the ancient Babylon Fortress in Cairo. Dating back to the 3rd or 4th century, it has over 1,500 years of history, making it one of Egypt’s oldest churches. Visitors can see the suspended city wall through glass on the right side of the entrance, while the main sanctuary is ingeniously hung above the passageway, giving it the distinctive “Hanging” designation.

Abu Simbel Temples

The Abu Simbel Temples were constructed during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II around 1264 BC. These four colossal statues, located on the western shore of Lake Nasser, symbolize the greatness of Ramses II. Inside the temples, murals depict his valor in battle and his deep love for his wife, Nefertari. Ramses dedicated 20 years to carve the magnificent Abu Simbel temples from the mountainside, showcasing his accomplishments and affection.

The most famous feature of the Abu Simbel Temples is the “Two Days of Visible Light.” When the temples were constructed, ancient astronomers designed them so that sunlight would illuminate the inner sanctum on the pharaoh’s birthday and the day of his coronation, ensuring these significant dates were remembered. Unfortunately, during the construction of the Aswan Dam in the 1960s, the temples were relocated 200 meters higher. Even with modern technology, the sunlight alignment is off by a day, showcasing the remarkable ingenuity of the ancient Egyptians.

Temple of Edfu

The Edfu Temple, one of the largest and best-preserved temples in modern Egypt, was abandoned after the prohibition of idol worship by Roman Emperor Theodosius I in AD 391. It lay buried under sand for centuries until its discovery in 1806, which initiated excavation work. The temple, dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus, features walls and columns adorned with depictions of the battles between Horus and Set. For anyone fascinated by Egyptian mythology, Edfu is a must-visit destination!

We will also take you to the magnificent Edfu Temple, where you can don traditional Egyptian attire and sing “The Mountain Is Green” All eyes will be on you, making it a truly unique experience!

Listen to the beautiful voices of our group members as they dress up at the Edfu Temple and sing “The Mountain Is Green” Their excitement fills the air as they perform in this foreign land!

Temple of Karnak

There’s a saying: “Visiting Temple of Karnak is like seeing all of Egypt’s temples.” This is because Karnak showcases various architectural styles of ancient Egyptian temples. It’s one of the most visited sites after the Great Pyramids, and legend has it that it could fit an entire Notre-Dame Cathedral within its walls. Built around 2000 BC, the temple is dedicated to the sun god Amun and features 134 colossal columns resembling a primordial forest, showcasing the remarkable architectural ingenuity of ancient Egyptians.

Luxor Temple

The Luxor Temple, built in the 14th century BC, is believed to have originated as a temple during Egypt’s 12th Dynasty. Over 1,900 years, it was expanded by various pharaohs, making it the largest temple in Egypt. Known as the world’s largest open-air museum, the temple features colossal statues and mysterious hieroglyphics. Its hypostyle hall boasts 3,500 years of history, with awe-inspiring reliefs of gods and pharaohs adorning its stone columns.

The Luxor Temple showcases different charms both day and night. When illuminated at night, it transforms into a site of ritualistic grandeur, making it feel as though one is stepping back in time, experiencing the ancient ceremonies as if they were happening right before their eyes.

Valley of the Kings

Located on the west bank of the Nile, hidden in a deep valley, the Valley of the Kings serves as the burial site for ancient Egyptian pharaohs and nobles. Divided into the East and West Valleys, each tomb is carved from the rock. Since the New Kingdom, pharaohs opted for these concealed tombs over prominent pyramids to avoid tomb robbers. Among these, the Temple of Habu, dedicated to Ramses III, stands as the largest and best-preserved structure, featuring exquisite wall carvings depicting battles against maritime tribes.

Hatshepsut

Hatshepsut was the fifth ruler of Egypt’s 18th dynasty and shares similarities with China’s only female emperor, Wu Zetian. The temple dedicated to her, located on a cliff next to the Valley of the Kings, showcases important events from her reign through wall murals. This temple is unique in Egypt as it features three levels, utilizing the mountainside for support.

Kom Ombo

This is the only symmetrical twin temple in all of Egypt, featuring two grand entrances dedicated to two main gods. One is the falcon god Horus, symbolizing justice, while the other is dedicated to the crocodile god, associated with evil, hence the name “Twin Temple.” Additionally, wall murals of Cleopatra can be found here, so be sure to admire her beauty!

Nubian Villages

During ancient Egypt’s Old Kingdom, the Nubians, an African tribe, lived as neighbors to the Egyptians until they were conquered. To instill fear in the Nubians, the Egyptians constructed massive temples and statues along the riverbanks. However, the Nubians later overthrew the Egyptians and produced their own pharaohs. Today, the Nubians and Beja people are recognized as minority groups in Egypt, each with distinct lifestyles. Let’s embark on a journey on a felucca to visit these minority communities.

We ride camels to a Nubian village, where we are welcomed as guests and get to taste their unique desserts.

Glass Boat Tour of the Red Sea

The Bible recounts the miraculous parting of the Red Sea by the prophet Moses as he led the Israelites out of Egypt. While the reasons for the sea’s name remain debated, we will explore the vibrant underwater world by taking a glass-bottom boat tour in the stunning blue waters of the Red Sea. From the boat, you can admire vast coral reefs and tropical fish, and there’s also the option to swim and snorkel in this beautiful setting.

Want more than just photos? Check out this video shot by our professional photographer, Chen Wanyu, from our Egypt trip on November 4, 2017. Watch as skilled snorkelers swim alongside colorful fish—don’t miss it!

Sufi dance and the captivating belly dance

Experience the traditional Sufi dance and the captivating belly dance performances in Egypt! Belly dance, believed to have originated in Egypt, has a rich history. Sufi dance, rooted in Islamic Sufism, emphasizes asceticism and meditation. The seemingly simple spinning motion aims to achieve a union with the divine. In May 2019, our esteemed guests had the unique opportunity to wear Sufi dance costumes and sway alongside the dancers, immersing themselves in the joy of this traditional art form!

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization(NMEC)

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, located in downtown Cairo, covers an exhibition area of approximately 23,235 square meters. On April 3, 2021, it hosted the globally acclaimed “Pharaoh’s Golden Parade,” where 22 ancient Egyptian mummies (18 pharaohs and 4 queens) were transported from the original Egyptian Museum to the new facility. The museum officially opened to the public the following day.

In addition to mummies and the famous golden mask of Tutankhamun, the Egyptian Civilization Museum impressively showcases artifacts such as high heels, toothbrushes, and condoms. These inventions, dating back over three thousand years, highlight the incredible ingenuity of ancient Egyptian wisdom that still influences modern life.

The Grand Egyptian Museum(GEM)

Let’s take a taste of the newly opened The Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest in the world, which just opened its doors in 2024!

In addition to the treasures of Tutankhamun, the Grand Egyptian Museum houses over 100,000 Egyptian artifacts spanning prehistoric, pharaonic, Greek, and Roman periods. A towering statue of Ramses II stands in the spacious atrium, surrounded by a grand granite sculpture weighing 83 tons, along with massive victory columns of King Merneptah and statues from the Ptolemaic period. The museum also displays the ancient solar boat and royal mummies, enhancing its extensive collection.

Khan El Khalili Market

When in Egypt, don’t miss the vibrant Khan El Khalili Market, a lively bazaar transformed from an old caravanserai. It’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike, offering a rich experience of daily life in the area. Here, you can immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere, explore various shops, and discover unique local crafts and goods.

Look at this beautifully crafted copper plate! Can you guess how much it costs? Not much—just 150 NTD! While our itinerary doesn’t focus on shopping, this local market is your chance to dig for treasures. If you miss out, the bus won’t bring you back!

Citadel of Saladin

The ancient fortress, built in 1176 by King Saladin to defend against the Crusaders, features a unique architectural style reminiscent of Istanbul. Within its walls, you can find several mosques and the Egyptian Military Museum, making it a significant historical site in Egypt.

Mohamed Ali Mosque

The Muhammad Ali Mosque is the most prominent structure within the Citadel, built in the 19th century. It showcases Ottoman architectural style, featuring exterior snow-white stone and an opulent prayer hall. Symbolizing modern Egypt, it stands as a counterpart to the pyramids of ancient Egypt. This mosque is situated at the highest point of the Citadel, offering a stunning panoramic view of Cairo.
